Jose Perez, the six-foot-five-inch graduate transfer guard out of West Virginia, announces his commitment to the Sun Devils on Sunday night on X, (formerly known as Twitter).

Perez parted ways with the Mountaineers two weeks ago. He then would go on to visit two schools: Arizona State and Ole Miss. But it was the Sun Devils that landed Perez.

Coming out of New York, the guard began his college career at Gardner Webb. After two seasons there he spent his junior season at Marquette. Then he transferred again, to Manhattan. Finally, after the 2021-22 season, he left Manhattan. He transferred out of Manhattan due to former head coach Steve Masiello being let go two weeks before the season started.

During the 2021-2022 season, Perez was playing for Manhattan and was averaging 18.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game. Perez was shooting 40% from the field and was named the Preseason MAAC Player of the Year.

Perez’s path to Arizona State

The journeyman chose to spend his last season at West Virginia. However, Perez had to sit out for the entirety of the 2022-2023 season due to a denied waiver by the NCAA.

Perez was prepared to suit up for West Virginia this season, but the surprising news of Bob Huggins resigning after some off-court controversies caused him to enter the portal. Again.

However, Perez decided to return to play for new West Virginia head coach Josh Eilert. At least for the time being…

On Sept. 30, West Virginia and Perez went their separate ways after a dispute about Perez not attending a study hall that ultimately led to him not being allowed to attend practice during that week, according to wvsportsnow.com.

If Perez plays the way the Sun Devils hope he does, it would be a fantastic move by Coach Bobby Hurley. He is expected to be immediately eligible to play this season.
