TEMPE, Ariz. — ASU football is in the market for a quarterback. The Sun Devils were planning on adding one in the spring portal window before Jaden Rashada transferred last week. Now with only two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, Sam Leavitt and Trenton Bourguet, adding a quarterback is a must.

Head coach Kenny Dillingham is looking for a quarterback to compete for the starting job, and they hosted a quarterback on a visit Monday.

ASU football hosts QB Jeff Sims

Jeff Sims is the No. 9 currently available QB in the transfer portal and a three-star transfer prospect according to 247 Sports. Sims has a lot of experience under his belt, serving as a three-year starter for Georgia Tech from 2020-2022. The quarterback began a visit with Arizona State football on Monday according to Chris Karpman of Sun Devil Source.

In his career with the Yellowjackets, he threw for 4,464 yards in his three seasons in Atlanta. Sims added 30 passing touchdowns while throwing 23 interceptions.

He also proved to be a legitimate rushing threat, as he ran for over 300 yards each season with Georgia Tech. In his Georgia Tech career, he finished with 1,166 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.

After his three seasons with Georgia Tech, Sims transferred to Nebraska. Unfortunately, he struggled, especially with ball control. Sims played significantly in three games for the Huskers and threw for 282 yards and a touchdown. The biggest concern? He threw six interceptions and had four fumbles. For those keeping track at home, that’s one touchdown compared to 10 turnovers.

Now with one season of eligibility, Arizona State is pursuing Sims. Despite his catastrophic season in 2023, he did show potential with Georgia Tech and is 6’4, 220 lbs, a nice frame for a QB. His style of play could be used situationally given his ability to run, and he could be a serviceable backup behind Leavitt.
