TEMPE, Ariz. — Kenny Dillingham announced that Trenton Bourguet is expected to start on Saturday against California. QB Drew Pyne is out with several injuries and will be out for the “near future” according to Dillingham. Jaden Rashada is still out, and BYU transfer Jacob Connover will back up Bourguet on Saturday.

Trenton Bourguet is expected to start in the first-day game of the season

“At the end of the day, everybody has their own journey,” Bourguet said after practice on Tuesday. This isn’t the first time that Arizona State is turning to the Tuscon native after an injury.

Last season he was thrust into the limelight against a ranked Washington at home (also during a day game). Then starting quarterback Emory Jones left the game with a concussion. Bourguet went on to throw three touchdowns and the afternoon ended with students and fans gathering in celebration in the middle of Frank Kush Field.

Now the staff is calling his number again. Now the ups and downs of the sport are normal for him.

“Over these years I’ve had so many ups and downs, whether I was starting, I didn’t start, whether I was never gonna see the field,” Bourguet said. “For me, it’s just continuing to be the same person each day.”

Taking a look at the opponent

Arizona State will take on the California Golden Bears at noon in their first road game, and day game, of the season.

“They’re really defensive sound… they’re gonna be balanced in the back, in the back end they have a lot of great DBs,” Bourguet continued. “They’re penetrators, they’re gonna cause some ruckus up front. But for us, it’s just executing the gameplan, and not looking too far ahead, looking to Saturday. Just try to have great practices each and every day.”

The Golden Bears currently boast a 2-2 record. They’re coming off a 27-point beatdown to Washington, arguably the top team in the conference.

On the season Cal gives up 27.75 points per game. The Golden Bears also surrender an average of 340 yards per game. 234 of those yards come via the passing game.

Bourguet has a chance to make an impact and help lead the Sun Devils to their first conference win of the 2023 season.
