Jeff Sims transfers to ASU football.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Three-star transfer quarterback Jeff Sims announced Wednesday he would enroll and continue his collegiate career at ASU. Sims played three years at Georgia Tech and one season at Nebraska. He will be eligible to play immediately and will have one season of eligibility plus a redshirt season remaining.

Sims is a speedy dual-threat quarterback with talent but struggles with turnovers. Sims threw for more than 1,000 yards and ran for more than 300 yards in 2022 with just three interceptions at Georgia Tech. But he transferred to Nebraska and struggled last year.

The dual-threat quarterback dealt with an ankle injury and started just three games last season for the Cornhuskers. Sims threw for 282 yards and ran for an additional 189 yards, but scored just two total touchdowns and threw six interceptions.

Jeff Sims will battle for the starting role

After news broke that redshirt freshman quarterback Jaden Rashada was transferring to Georgia, head coach Kenny Dillingham made it a priority to bring in another quarterback to battle for the starting job.

ASU now has just three scholarship quarterbacks currently on the roster. Redshirt senior Trenton Bourget, redshirt freshman Sam Leavitt and now Sims. Rashada was the ideal starter last season but was injured early on. That left Bourget to make the bulk of the starts for the Sun Devils in 2023.

Now Dillingham has brought in two former Big Ten quarterbacks, both with dual-threat abilities to compete with Bourget for the starting job in 2024.

Jeff Sims has experience

Sims has played in more than 25 games throughout his collegiate career. During his three years at Georgia Tech, threw for 4,464 yards and rushed for 1,166 yards. Sims accounted for 41 total touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets.

If Sims can protect the ball, he has more than a fair chance to make a run at the starting quarterback role for the Sun Devils in 2024.
