TEMPE- A fresh new team will take the field wearing maroon and gold today, Saturday, Sept. 5. After losing a good portion of starters to the transfer portal or graduation or the NFL, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham used it to his advantage to have one of the top portals in the nation.
One of many new faces in the WR room
One signing in particular could potentially have a major impact for ASU football on the offensive side. Senior wide receiver Omarion Miller found himself in the transfer portal after having a breakout season with his former school, the University of Colorado.
Both ASU and Boulder can be known for their explosive offense on the field, while two big-name coaches, in Colorado’s case, Dieon Sanders, run the show.
“I’ve grown a lot as a player, just in the game. Kenny has a lot of pro NFL stock on the offense. It’s just the game slowing down for me and being able to see how they operate,” Miller said.
Great player, even better person with links to former ASU star
In previous media days for ASU football, Dillingham has praised Miller not only as a player, but as a person.
“We knew the talent we were getting; I didn’t understand that we were getting a really, really good person. He’s a really good kid, he cares about his teammates, he’s humble. I didn’t appreciate the person we were getting, so I am happy with who we got as a human being,” Dillingham said.
In response to the praise by Dillingham, Miller said he surrounds himself with a lot of good people.
“It makes me feel great. I don’t want to say anything changed but once I got here, I felt a better self. I surround myself with a lot of good people. It’s a big blessing for me to be a good person so I try to be the best I can every day.”
Former ASU star wide receiver Jordan Tyson, who was drafted to the NFL this year eighth overall to the New Orleans Saints, also transferred from Colorado. Miller looks to take over the role of starting wide receiver for his close friend, Tyson, who helped him get to where he is today.
Miller opened up about the special bond the two share over the game of football. They met when Tyson started his freshman year at Boulder, before transferring to the desert.
“Just getting a feel from (Tyson), coming from Colorado, coming to here, I’m in that same boat,” Miller said during the spring. “It was good to hear from him and hear what he had to say.”
