Pro Sun Devil on the move in the NFL

SAN FRANCISCO, — A former Arizona State football standout is on the move in the NFL. Chase Lucas, a local product from Chandler High School, has carved out a solid special teams role in the NFL and is on the move after two seasons in the NFL with the Detroit Lions.

Lucas appeared in 12 games and played 230 special teams snaps in 2023 as a gunner.

Now the 27-year-old will be returning to the western portion of the United States.

The defending NFC Champions the San Francisco 49ers are signing Chase Lucas to a one-year deal, per Aaron Wilson.

The 7th-round pick is carving himself out a role on special teams units. While the two-year player has only registered six tackles in 18 games but is routinely praised for his special team role.

“The Lions’ 2022 seventh-rounder heads to Santa Clara after two seasons in Detroit where he performed particularly well as the team’s gunner on punts,” said Mike Garafolo of NFL Media.

Lucas at Arizona State

While at Arizona State Chase Lucas was a dominant defensive back. Over the span of his college career, Lucas tallied 223 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, and two sacks. The local product was a shutdown corner, garnering six interceptions and 34 passes defended.

Lucas also had two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in his ASU career.

In his graduate season with the Sun Devils, Lucas was one of only four corners in CFB to not allow a touchdown (minimum 250 snaps).

Chase Lucas is also the only player in Arizona State football history to go 5-0 against rival Arizona (per Sun Devil Athletics).
