TEMPE, Ariz. – Former Arizona State star running back Cam Skattebo is officially out for the season after suffering a horrific ankle injury on Sunday during the New York Giants game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Giants rookie, drafted in the fourth round with the 105th overall pick, quickly rose to become New York’s starting running back. Though just a rookie, Skattebo has already made a major impact on and off the field.
Skattebo’s incredible start to NFL career
Through just eight NFL games, Skattebo’s racked up five touchdowns, 410 rushing yards and 207 receiving yards. Known for his physical, fearless playing style, “Skatt” has built a reputation for lowering his body and taking anyone in his path.
Off the field, Skattebo has become an internet sensation. His shirt-ripping, backflips and infectious personality have exploded on social media. The Giants’ social media team has even released a viral video featuring players doing their best “Skattebo impression” during practice.
Skattebo’s horrific injury
During the Giants’ Week 8 matchup against the Eagles, Skattebo was carted off mid-game after a devastating injury. The play occurred as he attempted to make a catch over the middle from quarterback Jaxson Dart. Eagles linebacker Zack Baun tackled him as the ball arrived, twisting Skattebo awkwardly on the ground.
His right leg was caught beneath Baun during the tackle, and when Skattebo tried to get up, his ankle was visibly facing the wrong direction.
The emotional toll was immediate. Dart, who was visibly distraught and upset, kneeled on the field, and shouted in frustration before holding his head in his hands. He rushed to Skattebo’s side and exchanged their signature “head-butt” handshake one last time.
Skattebo was placed in an air cast and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. As he was carted off, Eagles fans rose in a standing ovation, a powerful display of sportsmanship that crossed team lines acknowledging not just the injury but emerging promise of a rising young player.
Doctors later confirmed the injury as an open ankle dislocation, meaning the dislocation was accompanied by an open wound at the joint. Skattebo underwent emergency surgery shortly after.
What’s next for Skattebo?
The Giants have yet to announce a timetable for Skattebo’s return, but it’s clear he will miss the remainder of this season.
If there’s one thing fans know about Cam Skattebo, it’s that he’s built to bounce back.
“This is just the beginning of my journey and I can’t wait to show you guys all about it!!!” Skattebo wrote on social media.
