TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State basketball has had a very active offseason in the transfer portal. With a lot of new players on the roster, Sun Devil fans have some new names to learn. One of those is Chicago native, Adam “Ace Wolf” Miller.

Adam Miller’s Journey to Tempe

Tempe is Adam Miller’s third stop in his college basketball career. The guard spent his first season in Champaign, Ill. Miller played for Brad Underwood at Illinois University and had a very successful freshman season.

The freshman started and appeared in 31 games. That was the most in the Big Ten that season. Miller played alongside current NBA player Ayo Dosunmu in the backcourt. The sharpshooter averaged just over eight points per game while knocking in 1.7 threes per game. Miller drained 52 threes on the season, good for 12th in the Big Ten. Not bad at all for a freshman.

Of course, these were the expectations for Miller. Ever since middle school the guard has been a coveted prospect. Illinois fans praised Miller as their hometown hero.

Miller attended Morgan Park high school and was a four-star prospect. 247 Sports ranked him 35th in the nation.

Unfortunately for the Illini, things didn’t work out for the two, and they parted ways. The hometown hero entered the portal.

Miller found his way to LSU, choosing the Tigers over many teams, including Arizona State. The plan was for Miller to play, and have an impact, right away for the SEC program. Unfortunately, the prized transfer tore his ACL during the summer and missed the whole 2021-2022 season.

To make things worse for Miller, after sitting out a year LSU head coach Will Wade was fired. After the firing, Miller entered the transfer portal again. After exploring his options and meeting new LSU head coach Matt McMahon, he decided to return to LSU.

In 2022-2023, Miller improved many aspects of his game, despite the year-long injury. His scoring average, assist numbers, steals per game, and free throw percentage all improved. Miller also proved to be a high-volume three-point shooter, hitting over two per game. On the season he put in 75 three-pointers, good for sixth in the SEC.

At the end of the year, Miller decided to enter the portal again, and this time he found his way to Bobby Hurley and Tempe.

Arizona State basketball welcomes Adam Miller

While at Morgan Park high school, Miller’s coach was Nick Irvin. Now Irvin serves as a special assistant to head coach Bobby Hurley at Arizona State.

Playing for his old coach was no doubt a draw for Miller.

The Chicago native has had his fair share of adversity in college athletics. A season-ending injury and a coach being fired can be challenging to deal with.

The Sun Devils hope they can help right the ship for Miller. He’ll no doubt be a big help, especially offensively, for ASU.

Arizona State lacked consistent offense last year. The Sun Devils were 10th in the Pac-12 in field goal percentage and dead last in free throw percentage. They also were in the bottom half of the league in three-point percentage.

Hopefully, a talented scorer like Miller can help solve those issues.

Last year only two Sun Devils averaged over double digits in scoring and neither of them will be on the team next season (Desmond Cambridge and DJ Horne). Miller averaged 11.5 points per game last season at LSU.

There’s a good chance the kid from Chicago ends up leading the Sun Devils in scoring this season.
