TEMPE, ARIZ- Arizona State Sun Devils take on BYU in an epic gymnastics battle. Each team flipped its way to the finish, but ASU came out on top overall. The final score of the meet was 196.050-195.200. Arizona State head coach Jay Stanos said, “We still have a lot of things to clean up. We are continuing to show signs of progress, which is really exciting.”
Sun Devils keep winning streak alive
ASU traveled to Kentucky on Jan. 16 to take on the Wildcats, leaving with a 195.750-194.325. The Maroon and Gold looked to continue the win streak tonight and succeeded with an exciting win. ASU now sits at a 3-1 standing, while BYU finds itself at 1-3.
To start the meet off strong, BYU showcased beautiful bar routines, scoring a 49.075 overall. Their highest individual scores came from all around junior Ava Jorgensen, scoring a total of 9.900. Along with all-around sophomore Deb Silva, with a score of 9.850.
While BYU came out making a huge statement to start the meet off strong for the Cougars. The Sun Devils closely followed along on the bars. ASU had an overall event total of 48.850. The highest score came from all around senior Kimberly Smith, with a total of 9.875. This left fans and her teammates speechless by the beautiful performance.
Arizona State took over the vault to start the meet. They scored an overall event total of 48.900. The highest individual score came from Smith, scoring a total of 9.850.
History in Barbie
BYU also found themselves on the vault during the meet. Flipping and turning through every teammate, they had an overall score of 48.975. A stellar performance came from Jorgenson with a score of 9.825.
BYU took the floor as the Sun Devils began on the beam. The Cougars are known for their phenomenal floor routines that break the internet. Former BYU gymnast Rebekah Ripley performed a floor routine to “Barbie Girl” by Aqua in 2023.
She had a total score of 9.925 for the routine. This was during the peak hype of the Barbie era since the “Barbie” movie was about to be released. Ripley’s floor routine is remembered as one of the most iconic and exciting floor routines to exist in College Gymnastics.
The Cougars had an event total of 48.850 for floor. Outstanding performances are coming from all around junior Brynlee Andersen-Broekman, with an individual score of 9.775. Silva recorded an individual score of 9.750. Finally, the highest individual scorer came from all around senior Kylie Eaquinto. She scored a total of 9.850 points for the Cougars.
Smith continues as high scorer
The Sun Devils shined their way on the beam. Dominating difficult flips, turns, and landings. They recorded an event total of 49.075. Smith was the highest individual scorer, with a total of 9.850. Along with Smith, all-around junior Reese Grolla had an individual score of 9.825.
Along with ASU shining on the beam, BYU also had its chance to excel at the beam. They had an event total of 48.300. The highest individual scorer came from Andersen-Broekman, with a score of 9.875.
Maroon and Gold had their chance to take on the floor. They showcased nothing but true talent across the mat. They scored an event total of 49.225. With breathtaking performances coming from Smith, with an individual score of 9.000. Along with Smith, all-around junior Halle Gregoire scored a 9.900.
Maroon and Gold look ahead to continue the dominating force they have created on all aspects of gymnastics. Stanos said “Go out and focus, the job doesn’t change.”
