TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State welcomed Colorado College to Tempe for its third conference game of the season, and ASU looked to win its 3rd straight home game. With high stakes for both teams, the outcome was unexpected.

The Sun Devils came out with neither a win nor a loss, but a tie. ASU currently holds a 1-1-1 conference record, but did earn two conference points in Friday night’s 3-3 shootout win.

ASU’s rough first-period finish

The Sun Devils’ success on Friday night came from a few key players, but none more impactful than freshman forward Jack Beck.

Early into the game, ASU struggled to find momentum or enforce pressure on Colorado College.

Late in the first period, the Tigers scored three straight goals, and the Sun Devils faced a daunting deficit early. ASU entered the second period down 3-0.

“Blinked and they got three,” coach Greg Powers said. “We have to find a way to have that next shift mentality and stop momentum and get momentum back before it gets away from us.”

Heading into the second period, both teams had a slow start and had a difficult time finding a breakthrough point.

The turning point in the second period came from ASU freshman forward Jack Beck. Beck scored off of an ASU power play to get the Sun Devils on the scoreboard.

As the second period came to a close, senior forward Cruz Lucius scored on an ASU power play to close the deficit to only one goal heading into the third period.

Don’t count the Sun Devils out

Heading into the third period, ASU struggled once again to find that momentum and turning point, but as time ticked away, the pieces started falling into place.

Senior forward Bennett Schimek got the spark going with a goal in the final minute of the third period to tie the game, 3-3.

With high momentum going and lots of energy from the crowd, the Sun Devils were ready to head into overtime.

In overtime, ASU had many shot attempts, but it couldn’t get any into the back of the net. The name of the game was to protect the puck no matter what. The final seconds ended, and ASU and Colorado ended overtime in a tie.

Going into the shootout, the Sun Devils’ first man up was Beck, who had an impressive goal to start off the shootout. The Mullet Arena crowd went wild as ASU took the lead in the shootout

“It fired us up,” Beck said on the home crowd after his shootout goal.

Colorado missed its first attempt in the shootout, and senior forward Cruz Lucius followed with another ASU score. That gave the Sun Devils a 2-0 lead in the shootout.

After a second failed attempt by the Tigers, ASU brought home the win in the shootout, earning two conference points for the shootout win.

What’s next for ASU?

After ASU’s phenomenal comeback to bring home a tie and gain two conference points, the Sun Devils will look to keep that momentum going on Saturday. ASU and Colorado College will finish their two-game weekend set at Mullett Arena on Saturday night at 5 p.m.
