TEMPE, Ariz. – If things weren’t exciting enough for Arizona State football with the Big 12 Championship this weekend, today is national signing day for high school recruits. Head coach Kenny Dillingham has activated the valley recently, which is bound to help in recruiting. Earlier today, four-star quarterback Cameron Dyer officially signed with ASU.
Dyer is the top player in ASU’s recruiting class (247 Sports).
“It’s special to be a Sun Devil,” Dyer said. “Knowing that I’m about to receive the opportunity to chase my dreams at a place like ASU means everything to me.”
What is ASU getting in Cameron Dyer?
Dyer is from La Cueva High School in New Mexico. He is the No. 1 ranked player in the state and the No. 7 ranked quarterback in the country. Dyer was a standout quarterback at La Cueva, playing on varsity all four years.
The 6-foot-4 quarterback led La Cueva to the 6A state championship game in his junior and senior years. In his junior year, Dyer threw for 2,897 yards and 29 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 1,492 yards and 26 touchdowns. Dyer led La Cueva to a 35-14 state title win that season with 220 yards on the ground and three total touchdowns. Dyer earned New Mexico’s Gatorade Football Player of the Year honors in 2023.
The four-star quarterback has plenty of physical talent and athleticism. He’s also been on the big stage before. He played in the state championship game as a sophomore, junior, and senior. In addition to his championship experience and physical ability, he’s extremely versatile.
“I’m ready to take that next step and go help lead this team to a National Championship,” Dyer said.
Cameron Dyer is extremely versatile
Dyer lit up Friday nights as a quarterback on the football field in New Mexico. However, there’s a lot more to this four-star athlete than that. Dyer played football, and basketball, and competed in track at La Cueva.
The multi-sport athlete played varsity basketball since he was a freshman. Dyer averaged 11 points, 6.1 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.7 steals in his junior year. All those numbers were slight improvements from his already impressive stats in his sophomore campaign.
From the court to the track, Dyer finished third in the New Mexico 5A long jump finals as a junior. His third-place leap was 21-10.5, slightly under his season-best 22-5 earlier in the spring.
Although Dyer finished his high school career as a quarterback, ASU recruited him as a wide receiver. ASU wide receiver coach Hines Ward recruited Dyer.
Where will Dyer fit in with the Sun Devils?
With Dyer’s athletic and physical ability, he’ll get a chance at both positions for ASU. Dillingham said Dyer will get a look at quarterback in the spring. However, Dyer’s raw talent provides an interesting opportunity at wide receiver, with one of the best to ever do it as his coach.
In his sophomore year at La Cueva, Dyer played wide receiver as well as quarterback. Dyer caught 33 passes for 568 yards and five touchdowns that season. In the state title game, he had eight receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Needless to say, Dyer is a freak athlete who is bound to find himself on the field. Redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt still has three years of eligibility following this season. However, Dyer will have his chance to show what he can do at the position as well. But with the raw ability Dyer possesses, don’t be surprised if Ward turns him into a top wideout instead.
Dyer fits the culture in Tempe
Dillingham said Dyer is a great athlete with great character. In addition to excellence on the field, the Gatorade Player of the Year award recognizes athletes for their excellence in the classroom and community.
Throughout high school, Dyer volunteered locally in New Mexico with Saranam, which is an organization that works with unhoused families. He also spent time working with those involved in the Special Olympics.
Dillingham is building a fun, inclusive, and hardworking culture with players who want to be Sun Devils. Dyer is the newest addition for ASU fans to be excited about.
“This place has the best caches, the best culture, and the best fans out of all the places that I’ve been to,” Dyer said.
