SURPRISE, Ariz.- No. 12 Oregon State (1-1) dominates over No. 24 Arizona (0-2) during day two of the Surprise College Baseball tournament. The final score of the game was 7-6, leaving the Beavers on top against the Wildcats.
Bounce back win for OSU
Yesterday, OSU fell short during its season opener to Michigan. They lost 3-5 after being ahead for the first five innings. This game was a great opportunity for redemption to defend their name.
Black and Orange began the game ahead after senior outfielder Easton Talt ran from third to home base after a mistake on Arizona’s side. OSU kept up the score during the bottom of the third, allowing sophomore infielder Tyler Inge to score for the second run of the game.
At the top of the fifth, the Wildcats scored one run to add points to the board for the first time during the game. Senior infielder Maddox Mihalakis was able to add a run to his stats for UofA.
Junior pitcher Ethan Kleinschmit from OSU had himself a day on the mound. The left-handed pitcher finished the day with 80 total pitches, 3 hits, and 1 run. Kleinschmit played until the top of the sixth, where he was done for the day.
The Wildcats took advantage of a pitcher change-up and were able to score 4 runs in the top of the sixth. UofA was ahead 5-2 for the first time during the game.
OSU was trailing heavily going into the bottom of the seventh. Black and Orange needed something to get them going. At the end of the inning, OSU had scored 5 unanswered runs. The Beavers took back the lead in the game, 7-5.
UofA will face Arizona State on Mar.10 to defend the Territorial Cup. Arizona State will need to focus on the short game against UofA. Almost all their runs came from short game mistakes on OSU’s side.
OSU pulled out against Arizona to clinch its first win of the season. The Beavers will face Stanford tomorrow to continue the tournament.
