TEMPE, Ariz. — ASU forward Cullen Potter has entered the transfer portal as of Monday, closing his chapter with Arizona State men’s hockey and opening the door to a fresh start elsewhere—possibly where the fit may finally align.

First-round pick departing

Potter, the program’s first-ever first-round pick, made a significant impact on the Sun Devils before suffering a season-ending upper-body injury. His offensive execution, leadership, and work ethic set a high standard for the program, earning him respect from coaches and teammates.
Now, he becomes one of the most valuable players in the portal—a skilled forward with collegiate experience. His decision reflects a growing reality in college hockey: the transfer portal has become just as important as traditional recruiting for building skilled, competitive rosters.
For many players, the portal represents more than just a change of scenery; it provides a chance to gain a fresh perspective, develop new skills, and find a better fit both on and off the ice.
Some sources say all signs point to Michigan State as Potter’s next home. Before joining ASU, Potter had originally committed to MSU, later decommitting before ultimately signing with the Sun Devils. This possible return to his first choice adds an interesting plot twist to his hockey career.
For the Sun Devils, Potter’s absence leaves a noticeable gap, particularly in experience, leadership, and skill set. However, it also opens the door for younger players and underclassmen to step up and take on larger roles, filling that void as the program continues to progress.
This transition period will test the depth and resilience of the roster and program moving forward.
ASU gave him a great stepping stone to build on, but not to stand on forever. ASU will continue to grow and face hardships as a team, but needless to say, fans will still show out and cheer on the Sun Devils.
In today’s world, second chances don’t just exist, but they’re expected. Players move, programs adjust and careers can change at the drop of a hat with the right opportunity. Potter now puts himself into that space and mentality, carrying both lessons and rewards from Tempe and the hope that his best opportunities are still ahead.
But now the focus shifts to what comes next? It’s a matter of where the next chapter will begin. And for Potter, the next chapter could be the place where everything finally aligns.
