TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State Sun Devils hosted Biola University at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on Valentine’s Day. ASU yet again took the victory, leaving with a record of 16-1.
ASU showcased impressive upper-body strength, aggressive offensive play, and strong defense, but the offense was the star of this game. The Sun Devils don’t just swim hard but sprint with purpose. Biola was no match for ASU, resulting in a strong 23-10 Sun Devils’ victory.
ASU’s stellar offensive performance
One player in particular has stood out in this team since the very beginning, senior attacker Millie Quin, consistently showing her determination whenever she is in the water.
In this game, Quin immediately scored back-to-back in the very first minute to get the Sun Devils to lead 2-0.
Quin is one of the most impressive attackers on this team, with a 60% shooting rate and 29 goals just this season. At the Triton Invitational, she scored 18 goals, making her No. 1 on her team in goals scored this season.
Quin scored four goals in this game and established herself as a dominant presence. Her explosive energy, combined with strong upper-body strength, gives her all the pieces to be a successful attacker.
The Sun Devils swim into victory
The more time ticked down, the more fun this ASU offense had. From blocks to steals, senior center Sophie Shorter-Robinson knows how to do it all.
Shorter-Robinson and Quin are known for their close bond in the water, their ability to move the ball, and their ability to get it up in the air to secure many points for ASU.
Shorter-Robinson stealing the ball out of Biola’s possession, throwing that ball across the pool, into Quin’s hand, then into the back of that net, shows how good a pair these two make. That power-play move was shown multiple times throughout the game and was a staple scoring tactic in the first half.
This team is all about multitasking. The ability this offense has to continuously switch gears from trying to score to getting that ball out of the Eagles’ possession takes an extreme amount of talent, and these Sun Devils have a lot of it.
This young Sun Devil team is showing the whole world how good they really are.
In the fourth period, ASU led 18-10, really showing that no matter how much they lead, they are always striving for more goals.
The Sun Devils are back in the water on Feb. 15, taking on Long Island University.
