TEMPE, Ariz. — The 4th of July is a national holiday and a day to celebrate. The smell of barbecues will be in the air, and the pop of fireworks will echo out. Arizona State football might have some fireworks of their own.

Defensive back target is committing on the 4th of July

Martell Hughes is a defensive back prospect from San Diego, Calif. 247 Sports ranks Hughes as a three-star prospect.

The 6’2 target will announce his college commitment on the 4th of July. Hughes has a top four of Arizona, Arizona State, California, and Washington State.

“I picked that day because it’s a fun day to celebrate,” Hughes told 247 Sports. “I think I’m ready to make my decision and excited to put the recruiting process behind me.”

The safety spent his weekends in June visiting campuses. He has taken official visits to all of his four finalists, including ASU (June 16). Hughes’s most recent official visit was to Washington State on June 22.

The California native racked up 15 offers before cutting down his list to four.

Martell Hughes speaks about Arizona State

Hughes recently took the time to discuss Arizona State football and the coaching staff with 247 Sports. He had some very positive things to say.

“I like the new coaches at ASU, and it definitely feels like they’re turning the program around. I was able to meet and connect better with coach Dillingham, coach Cooper, and coach Ward, and me and my family really bonded well with everyone we met,” Hughes said. “They made us feel extremely comfortable, and you can tell they enjoy being around each other, and the players enjoy being with the coaches as well.”

If Hughes were to commit, he would be the 15th member of ASU’s 2024 recruiting class. Kenny Dillingham’s first recruiting class as a head coach is currently ranked 44th in the nation. His class ranks an impressive fourth in the conference, only behind Oregon, Stanford, and Washington.

Will Dillingham be able to give Sun Devil fans his own fireworks on the 4th?
