TEMPE, Ariz. – Composite four-star tight end AJ Ia announced his commitment to ASU Tuesday. His commitment comes just after he visited Tempe last weekend for the spring showcase.
With his pledge, ASU jumps into the top 20 in recruiting rankings for the class of 2025, and first place in the Big 12.
Ia is a 6-foot-5-inch tight end out of Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, California.
Ia is ranked No. 17 for his position and No. 32 overall in the state of California for the 2025 recruiting class, according to 247 Sports.

Last season in six games, Ia started a bit slow but picked up the pace rapidly as the season went along.
He finished the season with 21 receptions for 273 yards. Ia averaged 13 yards per catch and caught four touchdowns.
Why AJ Ia chose ASU
In an interview with 247’s Blair Angulo, Ia recapped what he loved so much about ASU and the coaching staff.
“I was out there last season for the game against Oklahoma State and that was a big visit for me. I was able to see what it’s like, how things are there and everything I liked about them. Coach Kenny Dillingham and coach Jason Mohns are awesome,” Ia said. “We have a great relationship. It’s a strong bond — they were like my first big offer and that has meant a lot to me. They hit me up constantly and that relationship has only grown and grown.”
As for ASU, they had to fight hard to get Ia’s commitment.
Along with ASU, Ia had offers from 27 schools, including these six:
- SMU
- Washington
- Auburn
- Florida
- Miami
- Colorado
Ia will be an impact player for the Sun Devils
Ia is sure to be a big problem not only for defensive backs but linebackers as well. His big frame and height are going to make him a matchup nightmare for defenses.
This is the second highly-rated tight end that Dillingham and Mohns have acquired for the upcoming seasons.
Ia will join highly ranked tight end Jayden Fortier coming up in the 2025 season.
