TEMPE, Ariz. — The transfer portal looked like it was slowing down after a hectic December, but Arizona State football had another entry to the portal. The news came yesterday that backup quarterback Jacob Conover would be entering the portal. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Jacob Conover enters the transfer portal
Conover only spent one season at Arizona State. Before the 2023 season with the Sun Devils, he spent three seasons with BYU, in which he played sparingly.
The BYU transfer wasn’t expected to see much game action for Arizona State this season but was thrown into the fire after a barrage of injuries removed Jaden Rashada, Drew Pyne, and Trenton Bourguet from action.
In the 2023 season, Conover went 11/38 passing for 130 yards, three interceptions, and no touchdowns.
However, as a high school prospect, Conover was well-regarded. He was a consensus four-star by all major recruiting sites and participated in the prestigious Elite 11 Quarterback Competition.
While at Chandler High School Conover led them to three consecutive state 6A titles. He was the first-ever Arizona high school quarterback to accomplish that feat in the 6A division. Conover threw for over 10,000 yards in his high school career, putting up video game numbers every night.
His elite play for Chandler helped Conover rack up a dozen scholarship offers from schools like BYU, Arizona State, and even Alabama.
Conover enters the portal as a graduate transfer and was not expected to make the two-deep at all next season. Arizona State’s scholarship quarterbacks now include Rashada, Bourguet, and Michigan State transfer Sam Leavitt.
