TEMPE, Ariz. — This past weekend the Arizona State men’s basketball team hired Jarryn Skeete to be the new player personnel, recruiting, and analytics special assistant.
Arizona State basketball hires Jarryn Skeete
Head coach Bobby Hurley has a connection with Skeete dating back to early in his playing career. Skeete played all four years of college ball at the University of Buffalo from 2012 to 2016. Hurley took the head coaching job at Buffalo in 2013 and coached Skeete for two years before he became the head coach at ASU in 2015.
During Hurley’s two-year tenure at Buffalo, he led the Bulls to a 42-20 record, winning the regular season conference title each year. In the 2014-2015 season, Hurley led the Bulls to a conference tournament championship and its first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
Skeete saw a massive jump in production in the two years Hurley was at Buffalo. His minutes jumped from 22.3 to 29.7 per game, his field goal percentage improved from 30.1 to 38.4 percent. He also went from averaging 5.5 points per game to over nine points per game.
Skeete was a starter all four years at Buffalo and earned Mountain American Conference All-Freshman Team honors in 2013. Skeete went on to play in the National Basketball League in Canada.
Recruiting advantage
The new assistant may be getting started quickly in his new role, as Skeete reportedly has a connection to four-star prospect Amier Ali. Take a look at this tweet from Trilly Donovan, an anonymous college hoops account. Donovan has a track record of accurate inside information.

It can’t be 100% sure that Donovan’s tweet is about Skeete. However, his hiring should solidify ASU’s staff for this season. That connection could be the extra piece in bringing Ali to the valley versus some of college basketball’s most successful programs.
About three and a half weeks ago, Ali narrowed his list of schools to five and ASU made the cut. Of the teams on the list, the Sun Devils seemed to be the odd team out. Ali’s alleged connection to Skeete might be the building block to ASU basketball bringing in its next big recruit.
