TEMPE, Ariz. — School is just starting up in Tempe, and presumably so are fall workouts for Arizona State basketball. Head coach Bobby Hurley has made a new addition to his staff, hiring former NBA Scout Greg Lansing as a special advisor, according to Stadium’s Jeff Goodman.

Arizona State basketball hires Greg Lansing

Lansing was most recently an NBA scout for the Philadelphia 76ers. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Indiana State from 2010-2021. Overall the Iowa native has been coaching hoops since 1990.

The 55-year-old began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of South Dakota. Lansing also had a career as a player there. He played for the small Division One school from 1986-1990 and was a key player for USD. Lansing was the North Central Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 1990.

Other stops for Lansing during his coaching career included South Dakota (assistant), Iowa (assistant), Theodore Roosevelt High School (head coach), and finally Indiana State, where he worked his way up from being an assistant to the head man.

He leaves Indiana State holding a school record of 91 victories in the Missouri Valley Conference. Overall he’s compiled 166 career victories, good for second all-time in Indiana State program history.

In Lansing’s first year as the head coach at Indiana State, he led the Sycamores to the NCAA tournament. He was only the second coach in program history to do so. The first was Bill Hodges in 1979. You may remember a pretty good player on that 1979, Larry Bird.

It’s unclear what his role will be under Bobby Hurley with Arizona State basketball as a special advisor. One thing that is clear, is there are Pac-12 championship aspirations in Tempe. The Sun Devils are looking to build off their 23-13 record last season. We’ll see if Lansing can help do that.
