TEMPE, Ariz. — As the weather gets cooler and the leaves begin to change that can only mean one thing, college basketball is near. While in Tempe the temperature getting cooler means going from 100 degrees to 90, and saguaros don’t change color, basketball is still approaching for Arizona State.

The beginning of the season is just a few weeks away, and some teams are preparing behind closed doors. Arizona State basketball is one of them.

Arizona State basketball is playing in a secret scrimmage

Many may not know, but many teams will take part in “secret scrimmages” against one another. In other words, scrimmages that are not open to the public.

Arizona State is taking part in a secret scrimmage of their own.

Who you ask would ASU play in a secret scrimmage before the season starts? Arizona? Grand Canyon? New Mexico State?

The answer? One of the teams that made it to the Final Four last season: San Diego State.

Last year’s national runner will play the Sun Devils who lost in the first round of the tournament to TCU last season.

The last time these two programs met in a non-scrimmage was Nov. 18th, 2021, in San Diego. In that game, the Aztecs came away with a 65-63 win over the Sun Devils.

Overall, these two teams have met a total of 19 times with the head-to-head record favoring the Sun Devils at 14-5. Although the Aztecs have won the last two head-to-head meetings.

Since it’s a secret scrimmage, details like box scores, results, etc will not be made publically available. However, sometimes a secret scrimmage score does get leaked, if it does, we’ll update you here.

New look Sun Devils look to gain chemistry

The scrimmage is certainly a good test for an Arizona State basketball roster that is loaded with newcomers.

This upcoming season the Devils have 10 newcomers on their roster including the recent acquisition of West Virginia grad transfer Jose Perez.

This year’s newcomers are:

  1. Kamari Lands (Louisville transfer)
  2. Braelon Green (Recruit from Southfield, Michigan)
  3. Brycen Long (Transfer from Houston Christian)
  4. Malachi Davis (Transfer from Tallahassee CC)
  5. Shawn Philips Jr. (Transfer from LSU)
  6. Jose Perez (Transfer from West Virginia)
  7. Zane Meeks (Transfer from San Francisco)
  8. Akil Watson (Recruit from Middletown, NY)
  9. Bryant Selebangue (Transfer from Tulsa)
  10. Adam Miller (Transfer from LSU)

For those counting at home, that’s eight transfers and two freshmen.

With all of the newcomers between recruits and transfers this secret scrimmage will be a good test to see how the team meshes before the beginning of the season.

The Sun Devils open their 2023-2024 campaign in Chicago against Mississippi State in the Barstool Invitational on November 8th at 7:30 p.m. Arizona time.
