The Sun Devils had one of their final 11 on 11 scrimmages of fall camp on Wednesday afternoon. Despite the incoming freshman concert last night, the grounds crew got Mountain America Stadium turned around in time for the team to play.

The team started out with goal-line drills and both the offense and defense had their moments. Trent Bourguet had three touchdown passes at the goal line while Jaden Rashada did not have any.

The Arizona State defense was dominant in scrimmage

The main scrimmage began after the goal line drills and the new defense under Brian Ward began to flex its muscle. Despite not much in the statistical department, one of the returning stars, BJ Green, had another big day in the scrimmage. Head coach Kenny Dillingham had positive things to say about the defensive lineman.

“He is such a hard worker and so much fun to be around,” Dillingham said.

While returning stars like BJ Green shined during the scrimmage there were several newcomers who did as well.

  • Redshirt freshman Joseph McGinnis II stood out with two pass breakups and several tight coverage players.
  • True freshman Keontez Bradley from Mansfield Ohio had three pass breakups and one near interception that bounced off a helmet.
  • True freshman K’Vion Thunderbird from Chicago had two pass breakups.
  • Redshirt junior Macen Williams had the one and only interception of the day thrown by Trent Bourguet.

Last season, ASU ranked in the bottom third in almost every defensive category. Points per game, sacks, pass breakups and turnovers were the ones that stood out the most. The underclassmen may not get a bunch of playing time with several defensive starters, but the future is bright. Between the returning starters and the freshman newcomers, Brian Ward and Sun Devil fans certainly have things to look forward to this coming season.
