TEMPE, Ariz. — The offensive line was arguably the biggest issue for Arizona State football this season. Heading into this offseason filling out the offensive line was the top priority for the Sun Devils according to Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham.
This past weekend ASU made major strides in accomplishing that priority.
Arizona State football fills out offensive line
Arizona State football added two new offensive line transfers this past weekend, and both should play roles in the Sun Devils offense in 2024.
The first was Arkansas transfer Joey Su’a.
Joey Su’a
Su’a will be a redshirt freshman with four seasons of eligibility remaining. This past season as a true freshman, Su’a didn’t see the field for Arkansas as the 6-foot-4, 346-pound lineman redshirted.
As a prospect, Su’a was a consensus three-star according to 247 Sports, Rivals, and ESPN. According to 247 Sports Su’a was ranked as the No. 88 IOL (interior offensive lineman) prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. As a high schooler, Su’a garnered scholarship offers from several SEC schools including Georgia and his future school, Arkansas.
Now in the transfer portal, 247 Sports ranks Su’a as the No. 33 best IOL in the portal and the No. 336 overall prospect.
Shancco Matautia
This weekend, the second offensive line addition (via the portal) was Shancco Matautia. Matautia is a 6-foot-2, 346-pound transfer incoming from New Mexico. He started 20 games over the span of three seasons with the Lobos.
Last season Matautia was New Mexico’s starter at right guard.
Arizona State beat out Stanford and San Diego State for Matautia.
The veteran will add immediate starter-level experience to the offensive-line, and add more depth as well. Two positives for Dillingham and OL coach Saga Tuitele.
247 Sports currently ranks Arizona State’s transfer portal class as the No. 8 in the country and No. 4 in the Big 12.
