TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State football has been decimated with injuries already this season. After practice on Monday, star tight end Jalin Conyers said he’s never seen anything like it, and he’s not used to being injured. Head coach Kenny Dillingham gave an update on the injury status of many players.

Kenny Dillingham gives injury update

“When you’re dealing with injuries like ankles, and tweaks, some kids grow and respond faster than others,” Dillingham said. “And some kids have a higher pain tolerance, to kinda deal with things and function… so we won’t really know until we get to Thursday or Friday.”

With that being said he gave us some updates on certain players.

Dillingham said that Drew Pyne is probable. That’s a good sign for the quarterback position, as last season Pyne had a lot of success against USC. He threw for 318 yards, three touchdowns and only had three incompletions. On the other end of the spectrum, Trenton Bourguet is doubtful for Saturday’s matchup.

Jalin Conyers will also play against USC, as previously reported.

The offensive line

In terms of the decimated offensive line, they will still be without Emmit Bohle, as he’s out for the season. However, Dillingham said there’s “a chance” that Cade Briggs could return. Briggs is a redshirt junior transfer from Texas Tech. Prior to his redshirt season at Texas Tech, he played three seasons at New Mexico. For the Lobos, he started all 12 games his junior season at left tackle.

Briggs’ return would help tremendously in the trenches.

The defense

Clayton Smith is doubtful right now according to Dillingham. The redshirt sophomore was injured in the Fresno State game. So far this season he has three total tackles and a QB hurry. Smith was also extremely impressive during fall camp and should be a key player on the defense this season, whenever he gets healthy.

In good news, Anthonie Cooper is back. The redshirt senior has spent four seasons with the Sun Devils and is a critical part of the defensive line. His best season came in 2021 where he had 30 total tackles and 3.5 sacks. Cooper has yet to play in a game this season.
