TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State football has been extremely active in the transfer portal, but they haven’t forgotten about old-fashioned recruiting. A few prospects are emerging as high-priority guys, and a local player from Casteel High School is one of them.

However, there is an obstacle in this player’s recruitment, but that isn’t stopping Kenny Dillingham from a full-court press.

Arizona State football targeting local four-star

Jeremiah Newcombe is a four-star defensive back committed to Oklahoma University. Despite being committed to an SEC school, that isn’t stopping the Arizona State football staff from going all out for the local product.

Here is Kenny Dillingham and several other coaches on a home visit recently with Newcombe. Dillingham brought an astounding nine staff members on the visit. That is probably the most you’ll ever see, and an all-out attack in the recruitment battle.

The 247Sports Composite slots Newcombe at No. 350 nationally, No. 24 among cornerbacks, and No. 7 in Arizona.

Arizona State football has been looking to fill out the secondary, and they’ve already done that with a couple of transfer portal pickups. However, it’s tough to top a talent like Newcombe.

Another thing worth considering is how this sets up Arizona State in any possible future recruitment of Newcombe. Even if the four-star stays true to his pledge with Oklahoma, he’s more than likely to at some point enter the portal. This late surge for the Sun Devils will prove beneficial in a potential scenario down the road, as the coaches can develop relationships with Newcombe.

Let’s see if the Sun Devils can pull the flip off.
