Three-star cornerback Joseph Smith out of Spring, Texas has committed to play for Arizona State football. Smith, a part of the 2025 class, is the first commit to join after ASU announced its departure to the Big-12 on Friday evening.
Joseph Smith commits to Arizona State football
Smith is currently ranked as the 38th-best cornerback in the 2025 class according to Rivals. Last season Smith put up impressive numbers to help his team finish the season with a 7-7 record. His sophomore campaign included 78 tackles, 13 pass breakups, seven interceptions, two pick-sixes, and three total punt/kickoff return touchdowns.
His impressive play as both a safety and special teams asset has gained him national attention. Along with ASU, Smith had offers from the likes of Houston, Utah, Washington State, Kansas, and Purdue.
With the signing, Arizona State currently sits at fourth in the conference rankings for the class of 2025. All of that will change once all the teams reshuffle and join their respective conferences.
It seems only fitting that the first commit for ASU as a part of the Big 12 is from Texas, as the conference headquarters are located in Irving, Texas.
Smith is the second commitment in Arizona State’s 2025 recruiting class. The defensive back joins QB commit Michael Tollefson in the class.
“Texas 2 Tempe”
Coach Dillingham and Coach Carrington (defensive backs) continue their “Texas 2 Tempe” roadmap. In the 2024 class, the Sun Devils have very successfully recruited in Texas. This is a huge program-building pipeline if it can be consistently established in Dillingham’s tenure.
Arizona State has 17 commitments in its 2024 recruiting class, and seven of them are from the great state of Texas. It looks like they’re looking to continue that momentum into the 2025 recruiting class.
