TEMPE, Ariz. — The transfer portal is taking over college athletics, and no program is left unscathed, including Arizona State hockey. The Sun Devils have officially lost three players to the portal, including one of the most notable departures today.
Arizona State hockey loses prominent player to transfer portal
Tim Lovell has spent the past three seasons in Tempe playing for Greg Powers and Arizona State hockey, and this past season will be his last. Lovell is entering the transfer portal, first reported by Brad Elliot Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald.
The defenseman was incredibly valuable to the Sun Devils this season. Lovell recorded 37 points this season, the most by any defenseman in Arizona State hockey history. Many reports indicate that he will immediately become one of the top available players in the transfer portal. In ASU’s 2023-2024 campaign, the Massachusetts native tallied seven multi-point outings.
The three-year Sun Devil was a consistent offensive option for ASU, recording multiple streaks of five or more games with a point.
Lovell notched five goals and 32 assists this season, both career-bests. The highly-regarded skater was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award which is annually given to the top player in college hockey.
In the season finale against Alaska Anchorage, Lovell racked up a hat trick of assists. The Sun Devils would win, bringing them to 24 wins on the season, a program record. It will go down as Lovell’s last game played for ASU, barring an unexpected withdrawal from the portal.
Lovell finishes his Arizona State career with 101 games played, 12 goals, 64 assists, 76 points, 113 shots, and one game-winning goal.
