Arizona State Women’s Golf started its 2023 campaign with an invitational tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Along with the Sun Devils, the McGuire Invitational features 16 teams including the likes of Pepperdine, UNLV, and Ohio State among others. The tournament consists of three, 18-hole rounds, spread across two days. Monday consists of 36 holes, or two rounds, while Tuesday consists of one 18-hole round.

Arizona State Women’s Golf tees off its season in New Mexico

The last time the Sun Devils competed in this tournament was back in 2016 when they finished runner-up.

For the tournament, the Arizona State lineup consisted of six women:

  1. Patience Rhodes
  2. Paula Schulz-Hanssen
  3. Calynne Rosholt (2022 first-team all-Pac-12)
  4. Grace Summerhays (sister of ASU golfer Preston Summerhays and 2023 first-team all-Pac-12)
  5. Beth Coulter (2022 Pac-12 silver medalist)
  6. Ashley Menne (three-time All American)

The first round started off bright and early, more early than bright, beginning at 6:30 a.m. Mountain Time. The early start allows all 36 holes needed to be played in one day.

After the competition of round one, the Devils sat in a tie for fifth with San Diego State after shooting a total score of 295.

The individual scores after round one for the Devils read as such:

Schulz Hannsen: (75)

Rhodes: (74)

Summerhays: (71)

Rosholt: (77)

Coulter: (75)

Menne (I): 69

If you are new to college golf, one person from each team competes as an individual and their score does not count toward the team score. Additionally, out of the five competing as a team, the worst score gets dropped. For reference, in round number one Rosholt shot the highest score so her score did not count against the team total.

Looking at the individual leaderboard the scores sat as such:

Schulz Hannsen: T-28

Rhodes: T-13

Summerhays: T-9

Rosholt: T-57

Coulter: T-18

Menne: T-9

SECOND ROUND

Following round one, the Sun Devils had some work to do if they wanted to claw back in the race for the top spot. Round two would not be a complete 180 but it would be heading in that direction.

After a 295 in the opening 18, Arizona State shot 278 in round two, a whopping 17 shots better than round one. Four of the six participants for the Sun Devils shot an under-par round in the second set of 18.

Here is how the second round shaped out

  • Hannsen: After an opening round 75, Hannsen turned around and shot a one under 71. This 71 included a three under back nine and she birdied two of the last four holes.
  • Rhodes: The biggest improvement goes to Patience Rhodes. After an opening round 74, Rhodes shot a whopping eight strokes better in round two, a 68.
  • Summerhays: After opening with a 71, Summerhays nearly copied her round-one performance with a 70. This round included an eagle on the first hole
  • Rosholt: After opening with a 77 she improved slightly but not enough to be counted toward the team total. After a promising start, she made a double bogey on the 14th hole. She will still have time to come back with another 18 tomorrow.
  • Coulter: After opening with a 75 Coulter battled her way back to even par with a 69. Despite a double bogey on the 15, she birdied two of the last three holes to get to even.
  • Menne: Competing as an individual Menne fired off an even-par 72 in round two after a hot start in round one. The hot front nine could not continue into the back nine as she fired a 37 on the back nine. She still remains in the top 10 overall.

Individual standings

After a long day consisting of 36 holes the individual standings read as such:

  • Hannsen: T-28
  • Rhodes: T-13
  • Summerhays: T-9
  • Rosholt: T-57
  • Coulter: T-18
  • Menne: T-9

ASU is currently 11 shots behind Pepperdine for the lead of the McGuire Invitational.

The team kicks off its final 18 holes on Sept. 12, at 7:30 a.m. Mountain Time.
