The Arizona State Women’s Golf team has been in Albuquerque, New Mexico the past two days competing in the McGuire Invitational.
Arizona State Women’s Golf finishes McGuire Invitational
After 36 holes yesterday, the team was tied for second place trailing only Pepperdine. The wave had a whopping eight-stroke lead heading into today’s final 18 holes. After a shaky first round, the Sun Devils had an incredible second round. The team finished a total of 17 shots better from round one to round two.
If you are new to women’s collegiate golf the format for team events is a little different.
Each team travels six golfers; the top four scores from each team count toward the team total, the lowest one is dropped, and one person is competing solely as an individual.
In this tournament, the Sun Devils had three-time all-American Ashley Menne serve as the individual. We will recap her performance a little later, but first the team performance.
Today’s final 18 did not go the way Arizona State would have wanted being, so close to the top of the leaderboard after yesterday.
Overall, the ASU shot a 294 totaling six over par for the round. Out of the top ten teams on the leaderboard, that score wound up being the second-worst score of the day.
Kansas shot the best team total of the day coming in at an impressive 14 under par; which lifted them all the way into second place.
Overall, the Sun Devils finished third place in the tournament at +3 total.
The individual performances
The individual performances read as such:
- Paula Schulz Hannsen: +1 (T-17)
- Patience Rhoades: +1 (T-17)
- Grace Summerhays: -1 (T-14)
- Calynne Rosholt: +11 (T-59)
- Beth Coulter: +2 (T-24)
- Ashley Menne (I): -5 (6)
A very strong showing for Arizona State to begin the season. Several Sun Devils finished inside the top twenty and Menne finished sixth competing as an individual.
In an interview with http://thesundevils.com/ after the round coach Farr-Kaye said, “We did a lot of things well this tournament,” Coach Farr-Kaye reflected. “Our goal next week is for us to start off stronger every round. Ashley had a great start to her senior year! We look forward to going back to the Vanderbilt tourney at The Legends Club.”
As Farr-Kaye mentioned the next tournament for the Devils will be the Mason Rudolph Invitational in Franklin, Tennessee. That will take place Sept. 22-24.
