TEMPE, Ariz. — ASU baseball was trailing California 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning on Saturday. The Sun Devils were seeking their first sweep of the season, looking to close out a good Cal team. Catcher Ryan Campos strolled to the plate, cool, calm, and collected.
Campos’ poise and patience allowed him to draw a walk. This at-bat wasn’t significant to the game. The inning would come to a close after a ground-out from the following Sun Devil. However, Campos’ walk extended his on-base streak to 38 straight games. Consistency.
The Sun Devils have been up and down this season, but one thing has remained the same: Campos’ consistency at the plate. The junior catcher from Mesa would prove to be an instrumental part of ASU’s weekend sweep over the Cal Bears, and he was rewarded for it.
Ryan Campos of ASU baseball earns Pac-12 Player of the Week honors
The Pac-12 conference recognized Campos’ outstanding play this weekend by awarding the Sun Devil with Pac-12 Player of the Week honors. The catcher was instrumental in ASU’s offensive attack on a weekend where they put up 33 runs in a three-game sweep of California.
It’s ASU’s first sweep of the season, and the Sun Devils have scratched and clawed their way back to.500 (now 15-14 after a Tuesday victory over Grand Canyon).
Campos tallied six hits, with three being doubles, nine RBI, and two walks in the series. On the year he’s now batting .284, with 33 hits, 32 runs scored, and 35 RBI. The catcher has already tied his season high for home runs with eight on the season. He also is on pace to set a career-high in walks as he already has 23.
