TEMPE, Ariz. — The offseason is in full swing for ASU football, and now the Sun Devils have their first coaching change. Beau Baldwin, quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator, will not return to Arizona State and Kenny Dillingham’s staff next season.
ASU football and Beau Baldwin part ways
ASU football had one of the worst offenses in the sport this season. The Sun Devil’s offense hit rock bottom when they lost to Fresno State 29-0 at home. You simply cannot be shut out at home, much less against a non-Power 5 opponent.
After the Fresno State game, Dillingham stated that he was going to fix the offense. His solution: to take over playcalling. Dillingham took over play calling, and the offense looked better, but still not good.
Arizona State finished the year averaging 17.8 points per game (123rd out of 130 FBS teams) and averaging 322.2 yards per game (109th).
It is important to mention that the Sun Devils also underwent a slew of injuries offensively this season, particularly at the offensive line and quarterback positions. It just happens that those are probably the two most important positions.
This resulted in many plays with runningback Cam Skattebo or tight end Jalin Conyers under center, acting as a quarterback.
Potential replacements
At this time there have been no potential replacements mentioned. Dillingham is reportedly going to be actively involved in the process and interview candidates.
One name that is being linked to the job by some fans is Scott Frost. The former Nebraska head coach is most recently remembered for his time in Lincoln, where he went 16-31 with the Huskers. However, before that, he went 19-7 at UCF and led them to a perfect 13-0 season.
Prior to UCF, Frost was at Oregon from 2009-2015. He began his career there as an offensive assistant, before being promoted to the offensive coordinator role.
Oregon never ranked lower than eighth nationally in scoring offense during Frost’s seven seasons on staff, and the Ducks led the nation in scoring in 2010. Frost was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2013, and Oregon ranked in the top five nationally in both scoring and total offense each of his three seasons calling plays.
Who do you want to see as the new offensive coordinator at Arizona State?
