TEMPE, Ariz. — Roughly seven hours before kickoff Arizona State football ruled true freshman starting quarterback Jaden Rashada as out for the Fresno State game, first reported by Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports. Zenitz is a senior national college football reporter for On3 Sports.

Zenitz also reported that Trenton Bourguet is expected to get the start in Rashada’s absence, but Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne is healthy and available.

Jaden Rashada ruled out with an injury

In two games this season Rashada has thrown for 403 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. He has looked particularly successful when throwing the deep ball, displaying a cannon for an arm. At the time of this publishing, Rashada’s injury is not disclosed, and neither is a timetable for his return.

Last season Trenton Bourguet took over at quarterback when starter Emory Jones went down with a concussion against Washington. Bourguet earned the job for the remainder of the season, even after Jones got healthy. He threw for 1,490 yards, 11 touchdowns, and had six interceptions. He also connected with his receivers over 70% of the time, one of the better completion percentages in the FBS.

Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne has returned from a hamstring injury suffered during fall camp and is available tonight. Last season Pyne threw for over 2,000 yards, 22 touchdowns, and only six interceptions as a redshirt freshman with the Irish.

While Bourguet is expected to start (not 100% confirmed) according to Zenitz’s report, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Pyne get some opportunities. He was a high-profile transfer in the portal this past offseason.

Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham has typically shot down the approach of using two quarterbacks unless there is a clear advantage to it. We’ll see tonight what the game plan under center will be.
