TEMPE, Ariz. — ASU football opens up year two of the Kenny Dillingham era tonight at 7:30 p.m. AZT against Wyoming at Mountain America Stadium. The Sun Devils are coming off back-to-back 3-9 seasons, one of the worst stretches in program history. Meanwhile, the Wyoming Cowboys are coming off a 9-4 season in 2023, but have a new head coach in charge in Jay Sawvel.

Arizona State is favored by 7.5 points (FanDuel) and the game will be broadcast on FS1.

ASU football Week 1 predictions

ASU: 24 Wyoming: 17

Wyoming comes into Tempe as a potentially dangerous season opener for ASU. Their physicality up front will test the Sun Devils in the trenches, while their defense returns eight starters from last season. However, the Cowboys have too many question marks on the offensive side of the ball to pick them to pull off an upset. Breaking in a new quarterback and revamped offense on the road presents enough of a challenge, but without their leading tailback from last season, Harrison Waylee (knee injury), it sets up to be an uphill climb for first-year head coach Jay Sawvell. If the ASU offense can take care of the football and lean on its ground game, the Sun Devils should be able to ride a boisterous week one crowd to a victory. – Adam Kunin (0-0)

ASU: 31 Wyoming: 23

This will be the home opener for the Sun Devils and I think the crowd will come out to support. Wyoming is not an easy week one opponent, but ASU comes in as about a touchdown favorite. I think they do enough to hold off the Cowboys and open the season 1-0. – Douglas Santo (0-0)

ASU: 24 Wyoming: 14

Week 1 for many teams is a sloppy and low-scoring affair, and I don’t think things will be any different tonight. Look for new ASU redshirt freshman QB Sam Leavitt to have some growing pains as he’s still getting his feet wet in college football. The Sun Devils’ defense will steal the show on the other side of the ball. Defensive coordinator Brian Ward displayed his high-level coaching ability last season, crafting a game plan to hold Michael Penix and Washington to season lows in Seattle last year. Wyoming’s new offensive coordinator Jay Johnson is coming from Michigan State, where his offense last season finished 131st (out of 133) in points-per-game, averaging 15.9 points. The Sun Devils start 2024 with a win. – Brendon Pricco (0-0)

ASU: 27 Wyoming: 24

While week one is a tune-up for most teams this is a little more difficult matchup for ASU. Wyoming is coming off a coaching change with some new coordinators, but that will not stop them. This is a Cowboys team who took down Texas Tech last season and is always a smash-mouth running-the-football type team. The newly put-together defense line is sure to get tested tomorrow. – Cooper Burns (0-0)
