TEMPE, Ariz. — Kenny Dillingham and ASU football picked up his first Pac-12 coaching win last night against Washington State. The offense and special teams clicked last night while the defense had some struggles. That is not a sentence I’ve typed yet this season.
For the last couple of weeks after each Arizona State game, we’ve gone into a deep dive into their season stats.

Without wasting any more time, let’s see how the Devils rank after their best offensive performance, and first conference win, of the 2023 season.

Last night the Devils offense had its best performance of the season by far. After a disappointing performance last week against Washington they stepped up big time.
The offense had 509 total yards, 274 passing and 235 rushing.
After a stellar performance last night, let’s see where they rank in the major offensive categories.
- 3rd down conversion % tied for 90th (36.8% – up 20 spots)
- 4th down conversion tied for 74th (48% – did not attempt a fourth down try last game)
- 82nd in competition percentage on offense (58.9% – up 12 spots)
- Tied for 62nd in the nation in most Total penalties, not yards but actual penalties (48 for 447 yards – down 16 spots)
- 86th in the nation in penalty yards per game at 55.88 yards per game (Down 23 spots)
- Tied for 85th in the nation in first down offense (156 first downs for the offense – up 18 spots)
- Tied for 75th in the nation with 5 fumbles lost (Up 10 spots)
- Tied for 97th in the nation in interceptions thrown with 9 total (Up 11 spots with no interceptions last night)
- 47th in passing offense at 252 yards per game (No change)
- 82nd in passing yards per completion at 11 yards per (Up 16 spots)
- 46th in the nation in red zone offense at 87.5 (up 24 spots)
- 109th in the nation in rushing offense at 111 yards per game
- Tied for 102nd in the nation in sacks allowed at 2.75 per game (Up 12 spots)
- Tied 116th in scoring offense at 19.6PPG (Up 8 spots)
- 80th in tackles for loss allowed (6 per game – up 17 spots)
- 110th in team passing efficiency at 115.75 (Up 9 spots)
- 49th in TOP at 30 mins per game… up from 82nd (Down 4 spots)
- 82nd in total offense at 364 yards per game (Up 18 spots)
- 126th in turnover margin at -9 (Up one with no new turnovers)
ASU football defense
Last night the defense had its worst performance of the season, but still got the win.
After last week’s strong performance against Washington and not being rewarded with a win, they were finally gifted a win despite some struggles.
Let’s dive into where the defense ranks now.
- 3rd down defense tied 58th (37.2% – up 10 spots)
- Fourth down conversion defense tied for 123rd (72.7% – no change)
- Tied for 54th in first down defense (153 first downs given up) (Down 19 spots)
- Tied for 87th in the nation with three fumble recoveries. (Down 10 spots, no fumbles recovered this week)
- Tied 125th with two picks (No change)
- 80th in passing yards allowed per game at 236 yards per game (Down 12 spots)
- 78th in red zone defense at 84.8% (Down one spot)
- 18th in the nation in rush defense at 104 yards per game (Up 3 spots)
- Tied for 73rd in scoring defense at 26 PPG (Up 5 spots)
- 53rd in team pass efficiency on defense at 127.22… (Up one spot)
- Tied for 31st in sacks per game at 2.6 per game (Up 5 spots)
- Tied for 80th in team TFL per game with 6 per game (Down 29 spots)
- 39th in total defense at 340 yards per game (Down 5 spots)
Special Teams
Special teams have been an issue all season long but tonight was a bright spot. After missing a few field goals against Washington last week Longhetto only missed a long 53-yard field goal last week.
Let’s see where special teams rank now.
- Tied for 122nd in block kicks allowed (3) (No change)
- 21st in kickoff return yardage at 24.24 average yards per return (No change)
- 12th in kickoff return defense allowing 15 yards per return (Down one)
Overall, the numbers changed quite a bit for both sides.
While the defense may have had an off week, the offense came to play and helped collect the win against the Cougars.
Both sides will have a tough task next week as the Devils travel to play Utah. We will have all the stats and more once again next week.
