SAN MARCOS, Texas. — ASU football hits the road for the first time this season on Thursday. The Sun Devils will visit San Marcos, Texas to face the Texas State Bobcats.

The Bobcats, like ASU, are off to a 2-0 start and have looked very good. Last week Texas State beat UTSA 49-10, and in Week 1 they beat Lamar by a touchdown. Texas State is coming off their best season in program history where they won eight games, including a bowl victory in the First Responders Bowl against Rice.

The most recent betting lines have the Sun Devils favored by just one point (DraftKings). With this game predicted to by a tight contest, let’s jump into our predictions.

ASU football vs Texas State predictions

ASU wins 31-24

Arizona State and RB Cameron Skattebo had an electric game on Saturday against Mississippi State. With the momentum that ASU is building, it will be hard to slow them down, and even more difficult to stop them. ASU’s ground game is its strong point, with Skattebo having nearly 300 all-purpose yards last week alone. However, TSU’s QB Jordan McCloud already has over 500 passing yards on the season, so the defense and Sun Devil secondary will need to step up, especially with the fact that MSU was able to catch up in the second half last week. – Truitt Robinson (0-0)

ASU wins 31-17

Texas State ranks No.6 in the Sun Belt for yards allowed so far this season with 188 of them being on the ground. If Skattebo can keep up his dominance on the ground, I don’t expect that defense to flip overnight, especially on a short week. Skattebo will get his and QB Sam Leavitt will sure up the woes on offense. Expect Kamari Wilson to be a big part of the defense this week trying to bait and switch McCloud into bad reads going through his progressions. Hot take: Kamari Wilson houses one. – Jordon Leon (0-0)

ASU wins 27- 24

This matchup has ‘trap’ game written all over it. Taking a first-year starting quarterback down to Texas on a short week to play a sneaky good Texas State team sounds like a recipe for disaster for ASU. The Sun Devils even opened the week as underdogs to the Bobcats. So why pick ASU to avoid a letdown? Surprisingly, a sluggish second half against Mississippi State might be why the Sun Devils emerge victorious. Kenny Dillingham explained that his team needed to face some adversity early in the season, and the second half of the team’s week two win could be the wake-up call ASU needed after cruising through their first two games. Expect a close outcome, but for the Sun Devils to squeak out a victory behind strong play from a few of their Texas natives on the defensive side of the ball. – Adam Kunin (1-0)

ASU wins 41-27

I think ASU’s offense continues to thrive. The Sun Devils have shown the ability to pound the rock with Skattebo, lean on the scrambling of Leavitt, or move the ball through the air and I don’t see any reason for that to slow down. I think the defense stands tall early on, but as the game gets out of hand, Texas State begins to score some late points to make the game look more respectable. ASU has looked about as good as possible early on, and I think that continues into Thursday night. Look for the Sun Devils to cruise to a 3-0 start, matching their win total from all of last season. – Douglas Santo (1-0)

ASU wins 27-10

This is a game that ASU should win but isn’t a game that they can go in and slack off. This is probably the biggest home game in Texas State history. The Bobcats have sold many tickets and it will be a loud environment. I think the crowd will be a factor early on but as the game goes along ASU will settle in and get comfortable. – Cooper Burns (1-0)

Texas State wins 21-17

Coming off the biggest win in recent program memory, and on a short week, is a bad recipe. It becomes even worse when you are on the road playing a team where this is their biggest game of the season. You could make an argument that tomorrow night is the most important game in Texas State football history, and I think the Bobcats come out swinging. We the Sun Devils get complacent in the second half against Mississippi State, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they come out flat on Thursday. The key for ASU to squeeze a win out will be a balanced offensive attack. They need Leavitt to be more of a threat in the air than he was last week, and will likely look to share the carry load in the backfield more as Skattebo recovers on a short week. – Brendon Pricco (1-0)

The game will be broadcast on ESPN at 4:30 p.m. AZT. Arizona State alum Matt Barrie will be on the call.
