LAS VEGAS, — 130 days ago Desmond Cambridge cemented himself as an Arizona State legend. With his hail mary-halfcourt buzzer beater to beat rival Arizona, Cambridge wrote his name in the history books. The A.P. poll listed the Wildcats as the eighth-best team in the nation. They also were nearly unbeatable at home. That win put the Sun Devils in the NCAA tournament. Now Cambridge has signed a deal to play in the NBA summer league.
Desmond Cambridge has joined an NBA summer league team
Cambridge signed a deal to join the Toronto Raptors for NBA’s summer league. The NBA’s summer league is a short set of games in the offseason where teams have a chance to find new talent and try out different lineups.
Most notably the summer league gives rookies their first NBA minutes as well as letting G-League and other NBA hopefuls fight for a potential roster spot. Cambridge will be both. Without a contract with a team for this upcoming season, Cambridge is hoping his play can earn him an NBA spot.
The guard will be playing a guaranteed five games with the Raptors. Four of them take place between July 7-14, followed by a four-team tournament. The tournament consists of the top four teams from the week. The other 26 teams play a fifth consolation game.
As a result, Cambridge has a limited chance to earn his spot in the league.
While at Arizona State, Cambridge was the leading scorer. In his one and only year with the Sun Devils, Cambridge averaged 13.6 points per game. He was most known for his ability to hit extremely difficult shots.
The Tennessee native was also a terrific defender. Cambridge had an inept ability for sniffing out the ball and jumping into passing lanes and causing chaos. The guard averaged just under two steals a game.
Cambridge was named 2nd team all-Pac-12 and he was also named All-Pac-12 tournament. We’ll see if he can showcase his talent on a bigger stage now searching for his next opportunity.
