TEMPE, Ariz. — Frankie Collins is returning back to Arizona State for his second season with the Sun Devils. This time the point guard will be wearing a new number.

Frankie Collins is wearing a new number for ASU basketball

Last season in Tempe, Collins wore #10. Prior to playing with the Sun Devils, the Sacramento native played at the University of Michigan. While in Ann Arbor, he also wore #10. Now it appears Collins has had a change of heart.

In a social media post by Sun Devil Hoops, the program announced Collins would be sporting #1 this season.

Last season Luther Muhammad wore #1 for Bobby Hurley’s squad.

Collins is primed for a big season

Frankie Collins is expected to be the point guard for Arizona State this upcoming season. He is one of three returning scholarship players. Jamiya Neal and Alonzo Gaffney are the other two.

With so many new players, there are a lot of questions going into next season. Collins isn’t one of them.

Last year he averaged just under ten points a game. One of his best aspects was his floor vision. Collins averaged 4.3 assists per game last season. He finished fourth in the Pac-12 in total assists. Against San Diego, he dished out a smooth 11 dimes, a career-high.

The floor general also finished first in the conference in assists percentage.

Another part of Collin’s game is his tenacious defense. His ability to pressure the ball and make opposing guards uncomfortable is invaluable for the Sun Devils. It’s hard to really sum it up with just numbers, but we can try.

Last season he had 46 steals, good for 6th in the conference. He averaged 1.3 steals per game (8th in the Pac-12). He also finished 6th in steal percentage. Lastly, the point guard finished 14th in defensive box plus/minus. That was good for third highest on the team last year.

The number may be changing, but I don’t think Collins’s impact is going anywhere.
