TEMPE, Ariz. — Today Joey Votto turns 40, and the future Hall of Famer is enjoying his first birthday in retirement. Votto had an illustrious 17-year career in MLB, racking up over 2,000 hits and 356 home runs. Votto also surpassed over 1,000 runs scored and over 1,000 runs batted in (RBI).
The former big league star recently revealed his current retirement plans in his first season away from professional baseball.
After retirement, Votto enrolled at Arizona State University. Votto has said among other things like rest, he wanted to attend Arizona State to obtain a Spanish degree.

Will students see Joey?
Unfortunately for the common students at Arizona State, they will not see a future Hall of Fame player, roaming the halls. Votto stated he would restart his Spanish degree online. Maybe if you are taking Spanish classes online, you may be able to respond to a discussion topic with the former baseball star, or maybe get put in a group project! Wouldn’t that be a story to tell at Thanksgiving?
What does a degree from Arizona State do for Joey?
Arizona State is one of the premier universities in the United States and has one of the top online Spanish programs in the country (per OnlineU.com). While Votto hasn’t explained his reasoning for taking a Spanish major, another top program in Tempe gave Votto a shout on social media.
Paola Boivin is a professor at Arizona State’s Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications which is hailed as one of the top journalism schools in the country. Many retired professional athletes take a broadcasting route, and ASU can help Votto with that if he’s interested.
Either way, Votto is another addition to the illustrious list of MLB players to attend Arizona State.
