BREAKING NEWS: According to multiple reports, freshman quarterback Jaden Rashada will start for the Sun Devils. The news was first reported by AZ Sports John Gambadoro.
Jaden Rashada named starting quarterback
The quarterback competition has primarily been between Rashada, returning starter Trenton Bourget and Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne. Throughout the last few weeks, reports have suggested that Pyne was the leading candidate for the starting role. Just last week Pyne suffered a hamstring injury and has been out ever since.
Over the recent weeks, the media has asked Dillingham several times about Pyne and the quarterback competition. Like every coach, Dillingham did not comment much on either matter. Dillingham noted that the quarterback job had been taking “many shapes” but did not give much more than that.
In the Arizona native’s most recent update on the quarterback competition, he stated the goal was to win games this season. Not next season, not the season after, but this upcoming season.
With the job in hand, Jaden will play on the same field as his father did many years ago. Rashada’s father, Harlen Rashada, also attended and played for the Sun Devils years ago. Rashada had his eyes on ASU before eventually committing to Florida before a NIL deal fell through leading him to ASU.
Despite Rashada being named the starter, this doesn’t rule Pyne or Bourguet out. It’s a possibility that Bourguet plays in the second half of the season opener against Southern Utah. There’s also a chance that Pyne can take the starting job when healthy.
