TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson lost his position coach this week. Former ASU wide receivers coach Ra’Shaad Samples was a major reason that Tyson ended up in Tempe last offseason. Tyson, a former four-star transfer is from Allen, Texas. Allen is in the Dallas area, which is where Samples is from.

Samples left Arizona State football this week, accepting a new position in Euguene. The 29-year-old assistant coach will now be the running backs coach for the Oregon Ducks.

“This is a business,” Tyson said following Samples’ departure. “We have money in this.”

The two shared a connection and a bond, but as many are learning, college football is a business. Now more than ever before.

“It hurt my heart,” Tyson said. “He’s the one who brought me here. And he’s from the crib. I had a good bond with him.”

Tyson as a freshman at Colorado in 2021 was an electric receiver, winning Pac-12 Offensive Freshman Player of the Year. However, he missed the majority of last season, his first with ASU, due to injury. Despite coming back from injuries, Tyson and the rest of Arizona State football know what he’s capable of on the field.

“Jordyn has all the ability in the world,” Arizona State football head coach Kenny Dillingham said. “Day by day, he’s getting better and better and better. And you see the flashes, the flashes, the flashes, the flashes.”

Even though Tyson will have a different position coach this season, it’s not deterring him. His former coach taught him that this industry is a business, and he’s smart enough to realize that. But for now, he’s focused on Arizona State and making an impact this season.

“I don’t think I’m going anywhere,” Tyson said. “I hope not. But it is a business, yeah.”
