TEMPE, Ariz. — Kenny Dillingham and Arizona State football will welcome Caleb Williams and USC to Tempe on Saturday. Williams is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and one of the best players in college football. He’s hailed as a generational quarterback prospect and a no-doubt No. 1 overall pick.
The last time ASU played host to a Heisman Trophy winner was also against USC. In 2005 the top-ranked Trojans led by Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush won at Sun Devil Stadium, 38-28.
Trying to contain Caleb Williams
How do you stop Caleb Williams?
“I mean you can’t,” Dillingham replied. “You have to limit him… To say you’re gonna stop him is almost unrealistic.”
And that’s true. Williams is widely considered a generational talent, and the Sun Devils saw that last season. So many times ASU defenders would find themselves in the backfield, with a chance to bring him down, and he’d just escape.
He’s a huge reason why USC has the most explosive offense in college football, and why they’re favorites to win the Pac-12 conference. Williams is also a big reason why USC is favored by over 30 points on Saturday against ASU, even on the road.
“The goal should be to limit him, limit the explosive plays. Don’t let him get comfortable in a rhythm,” Dillingham continued. “But to say you’re gonna stop Caleb Williams, that’s tough to do.”
So far this season Williams has thrown for 878 yards, 12 touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He’s also yet to play a full game, as most of the time USC is up by so much, he doesn’t need to play in the fourth quarter. His 91.9 QBR is good for fourth in FBS.
The goal for Saturday
“The goal is to limit him, get them off schedule, get them in a position, get after the passer while still being able to keep coverage,” Dillingham said. “And when you get to him, contain him. He’s the master at pump-fake, evade. He feels pressure, he waits, he waits, he waits, right? And he’s like a boxer. Counter-punch, right? He’s elite at that.”
The Sun Devil defense will take the ring against Caleb Williams and look to shock the world on Saturday night.
