TEMPE, Ariz. — Despite winning their first contest of the season, Arizona State football is being ranked dead last in the Pac-12 conference. On3 Sports released their Pac-12 Power Rankings following Week 1, and the Sun Devils sat alone at 12.
On3 Sports ranks ASU dead last in the Pac-12
The Pac-12 conference has a legitimate argument for being the best conference in football. It’s a little ironic, considering this is the last season of the Pac-12, at least as we know it. When the season ends Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA will move into the Big 10 conference. Arizona State, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado will depart for the Big 12. Last but not least, Stanford and California will add a new coast to the ACC.
As for Oregon State and Washington State? Well, we don’t know yet.
What we do know is that the Pac-12 is as strong as ever, and that’s going to make it extremely difficult for Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham to compete in his first season. The Sun Devils started their season strong against Southern Utah, with a nice first-half performance. However, the second half was extremely unimpressive.
Arizona State was the only team in the entire conference to look unimpressive. Even the teams projected to finish below ASU in the preseason poll performed well. Stanford won by double digits in Hawaii and California nearly beat North Texas by 40.
The Sun Devils won by three at home against *checks notes* Southern Utah. Of course, there were a lot of circumstances surrounding the second half of the game, and Arizona State genuinely played a nice first half of football.
Despite those circumstances, the honest truth is Arizona State hasn’t earned a ranking higher than 12th… yet.
