TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State football has poached a young and talented cornerback from a Pac-12 school. The Sun Devils have a major need to fill at cornerback with the departures of Ro Torrence and Demetries Ford (out of eligibility). Head coach Kenny Dillingham made a step in filling those secondary roles on Sunday in ASU’s big recruiting weekend.
Arizona State football picks up cornerback transfer
Former Washington State Cougar Javan Robinson committed to play for Arizona State on Sunday. Robinson was WSU’s top backup cornerback, as just a redshirt freshman last season.
Robinson compiled 12 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and a pass breakup in seven games played this year for the Cougars. His lone start on the season was against Arizona State.
I get it, those stats don’t jump off a page. However, seeing a solid amount of playing time as a redshirt freshman is a good sign.
WSU coaches were “gushing about his upside” according to Cougfan.com. Reportedly Robinson’s coaches said that he was ‘jumping off the page’ in his first year in the program and had the potential to be “really special.”
One of his coaches during Robinson’s freshman season was Arizona State defensive coordinator Brian Ward.
Ward vastly improved the Sun Devils’ defense this season and was given an extension. Arizona State is the only defense this season that did not give up a touchdown to Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies.
Robinson is a guy that could be a sneaky pickup in the portal, similar to Dashaun Mallory a year ago.
