TEMPE, Ariz. — As game day inches closer and closer, so does a decision for Kenny Dillingham and Arizona State football. The Sun Devils have yet to name a starting quarterback, and the competition seems as even as ever. Incoming Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne is still recovering from a hamstring injury, and quarterbacks Trenton Bourguet and Jaden Rashada have been performing well at practices. After a Sunday morning practice, Dillingham addressed the competition to the media.

Dillingham gives quarterback competition update

“Those guys all have different skillsets, different strengths,” Dillingham said. “They all have their weaknesses. And how can we maximize their skillset and put the best team on the field that can win? That’s our goal.”

In college athletics, there isn’t tanking, or having a “rebuilding year”. Every season a coach and a program are trying to win as many games as possible. That’s a difference between college and professional sports, and it might play a part in the quarterback decision.

“The goal is not for the future,” Dillingham continued. “Our goal is not for next year, or two years. That’s not fair for the seniors that put in the work. Our goal, and my goal, is to put the best product on the field to give these seniors the best chance to win football games right now.”

The youngest player in the mix is true freshman Jaden Rashada. The four-star recruit oozes potential and watching him drop back in the pocket with his size and throwing mechanics, he looks like a future pro. However, the freshman still has a lot of growing to do.

Dillingham’s comments show that he won’t be giving any points for potential in naming the starter. The best player when Week One rolls around will be the one starting under center for the Sun Devils.
