TEMPE, Ariz. — Not one, not two, but three ASU quarterbacks are fighting off injuries. A three-quarterback competition in the offseason has thinned out to the fourth string, Jacob Conover, being the expected starter to open conference play… as of now.

Injury bug hits three ASU quarterbacks

On a night that was a monumental disaster, in which Arizona State fell to Fresno State 29-0, the worst news might’ve come after the game. Not even having eight turnovers can surpass the feeling of dread that comes with injuries, especially in the quarterback room.

Jaden Rashada

After the Fresno State game, ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham announced that Jaden Rashada would miss 4-6 weeks with an injury. Rashada’s injury is supposedly one that dates back to high school, and the true freshman reaggravated it in the Oklahoma State game last weekend.

Dillingham also noted that using Rashada’s redshirt will be an option. We may have seen Rashada’s last snap as a Sun Devil this season, and maybe ever, thanks to the transfer portal era.

Trenton Bourguet

That would leave second-string quarterback Trenton Bourguet. Bourguet left the Fresno State game with an injury on the Sun Devil’s second drive. He reappeared after halftime on the sidelines, this time in a boot.

On a night that was nearly all bad, Bourguet was a bright spot. Outside of an interception, he had a nice game going 6/8 for 47 yards. That doesn’t sound like much, but he exited the contest early, and well, there wasn’t much positive on offense.

Bourguet will be getting an MRI on his foot according to Dillingham.

Drew Pyne

The third-string and final member of Arizona State’s off-season QB competition is Drew Pyne. Pyne got the majority of the snaps under center against Fresno State. He went 5/13 for 52 yards with two interceptions and two fumbles. Not great.

Pyne eventually left the matchup with a muscular injury to his leg. His status moving forward is unclear.

Jacob Conover

That leaves Jacob Conover, who ended up leading Arizona State in passing yards against Fresno State. Conover is a redshirt sophomore transfer from BYU. He went 6/16 for 89 yards and two interceptions against Fresno State. Not great, but he showed flashes, and he was probably even surprised to see the field tonight.

The injury bug has struck the Sun Devils with a viciousness I’ve never seen before in college football, and we’ll see who will be the starter come next Saturday to open up conference play against Caleb Williams and USC.
