TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State football head coach Kenny Dillingham made some waves in the college football social media world this morning thanks to his outlook on being a college football coach in this new era. Dillingham didn’t hold back from calling out those complaining about the difficulty of being a CFB coach in the NIL and transfer portal world.
Kenny Dillingham voices his thoughts on being a head coach
“You know how many people want my job?” Dillingham asked rhetorically Wednesday morning on Arizona Sports Radio. “So don’t complain about what we do. You’re blessed. There’s a lot of negative of it, yes. But do you know how many people want to be a college football coach?”
Dillingham is currently the youngest head coach at any Power 5 school in the country and has only been a head coach for one season. However, he had to work extremely hard to get to that point.
“I literally spent nine years of my life doing anything to become a coffee boy,” Dillingham continued. “So don’t give me the ‘Oh it’s hard to be a college coach right now’. Yeah, it’s hard. Then quit.”
The young and passionate coach didn’t hold back his feelings on the matter. All of this comes after experienced head coach Chip Kelly left UCLA this past offseason to join Ryan Day’s staff at Ohio State as the offensive coordinator. Jeff Hafley, a four-year head coach at Boston College, left the college ranks altogether for the defensive coordinator gig with the Green Bay Packers.
Many coaches are burnt out by the transfer portal and NIL and wish to leave their general-manager-like obligations in the past. However, that isn’t the case with Arizona State football’s headman.
