TEMPE, Ariz. — Earlier this season Arizona State basketball head coach Bobby Hurley announced that redshirt junior guard Adam Miller’s waiver to play this season has been denied by the NCAA.

“Despite Adam’s diligence and dedication to providing the NCAA any additional information they needed for his mental health case, his waiver was still denied,” Hurley said in a statement released on Dec. 8.

However, thanks to a new TRO ruling against the NCAA, Miller is able to play after all.

Adam Miller expected to make his Arizona State debut

The Peoria, Illinois native’s waiver has been denied due to his second undergraduate transfer from LSU. But thanks to a court case against the NCAA, the NCAA officially cannot enforce their own transfer rules… at least for 14 days.

Until Dec. 27 the NCAA cannot enforce their two-time transfer rules, thus meaning all transfers previously ruled ineligible are temporarily eligible. The case also says that the NCAA cannot retroactively punish players for playing during the two week period.

However, if the NCAA wins the case at the full hearing on Dec. 27, players could be ruled ineligible again. This would also mean anybody who plays during the 14 days loses a full season of eligibility.

Arizona State has two games that fall in the open period. The Sun Devils face off against TCU on Dec. 16 in Fort Worth, Texas. They also play Northwestern on Dec. 20 at the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix, home of the Suns.

“I don’t see any reason that Adam Miller wouldn’t be out there against TCU and he had his best practice yesterday,” Hurley said when asked if Miller would play against TCU.

Hurley doubled down later in the day at a media availability and stated that the program would accept any potential consequences for Miller playing in the 14-day window.

What Adam Miller brings to the table

Coming out of high school, Miller was a four-star recruit and was a two-time Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year winner.

In the 2020-2021 season, Miller originally started his basketball career with Illinois. He then transferred to LSU in 2021 but missed the majority of the 2021-2022 season due to an ACL injury.

After injury, Miller returned to play 33 games for the Tigers last year but then transferred to ASU. Miller is averaging 11.5 points per game, along with 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game in his collegiate career.
