TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State (11-9, 5-4) basketball returns home to welcome Stanford (10-9, 5-4) to Desert Financial Arena Thursday at 7 p.m. for the first of a two-game home stand. The Sun Devils have lost two straight, and four of their last five games, after a disappointing trip to Oregon. Meanwhile, the Cardinal is 5-3 over its last eight games with wins over Washington, Utah, and ranked No. 4 at the time, Arizona.
This will be the second and final matchup of the regular season for the two teams. ASU won the first meeting, which opened conference play, 76-73. The Sun Devils mounted a 12-point second-half comeback, outscoring the Cardinal 17-4 in the final five minutes of the game.
ASU and Stanford are currently tied for fifth in the Pac-12 standings, yet just one game behind Oregon and Arizona who hold the top spot. The winner of tonight’s game would hold the upper hand and have the potential to jump in the standings since eight of the 12 teams in the conference will be in action tonight.
The Sun Devils are 8-1 at home this season, while the Cardinal is 2-3 on the road. ASU has won three straight matchups with Stanford, and seven of the last nine. With a win tonight, the Sun Devils would tie their longest win streak against the Cardinal in program history at four games.
With that being said, here are our Sun Devil Daily staff predictions for Arizona State basketball against Stanford.
Arizona State basketball predictions against Stanford
ASU: 75 Stanford: 65
The Cardinal offense has been hot lately, averaging nearly 80 points per game, and owning a 48% FG. However, its defense has been allowing 76 points per game and is coming off a close loss to Cal. ASU will have the home-court advantage and will be looking for a bounce-back win as well. DFA will be too much for the Cardinal to handle. – Truitt Robinson (6-4)
ASU: 75 Stanford: 70
The first matchup this season between these two was a chaotic game. ASU got off to a slow start and had to claw its way back into the game. The Cardinal offense has been much improved since that game and if ASU wants to win this game they will need to get off to a much better start. – Cooper Burns (10-5)
ASU: 78 Stanford: 74
Expect a high-scoring affair tonight as the Cardinal offense has been rolling as of late. The Sun Devils have the talent on the offensive side of the ball to outpace the Cardinal but cannot let themselves start as poorly as they did in Palo Alto if they expect to beat Stanford a second time. – Anthony D’Amato (7-9)
ASU: 77 Stanford: 69
ASU had a rough road trip, and Bobby Hurley was pretty disgusted by the end of it. This is a home stand that’s crucial for the Sun Devils to turn the ship around. I think home-court advantage is big, and the crowd will fuel ASU to a victory. Look for Frankie Collins to get the Sun Devils back on track. – Douglas Santo (9-7)
