TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State basketball has lost several players to the transfer portal, including Frankie Collins and Jamiya Neal. The Sun Devils are looking to reload offensively, and so far this offseason they’ve emphasized recruiting offensively skilled players and more outside shooting.
This afternoon ASU took a significant step offensively by adding a four-star guard transfer.
Alston Mason commits to Arizona State basketball
Alston Mason is a 6’2 guard from Missouri State. Last season he averaged 17.5 points per game. 247 Sports ranks Mason as the No. 164 overall transfer available out of almost 2,000 players in the portal.
ASU’s latest addition is also a legacy one. Mason is the son of Alton Mason, a former three-year starting point guard for the Sun Devils.
Mason is the second addition the Sun Devils have made this offseason via the transfer portal, along with forward Basheer Jihad.
Mason has one remaining season of eligibility. The guard spent his freshman season at Oklahoma before transferring to Missouri State.
Mason, as mentioned above, is a talented scorer. It’s not easy to average 17.5 points per game, especially in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Missouri Valley is typically regarded as one of the top mid-major conferences in the country. Mason also averaged three rebounds per game and 3.6 assists per game. He shot 42% from the field and 35% from three last season.
The junior guard had his career-high this season against arguably Missouri’s State toughest competition. Mason scored 36 points, shooting 46% from the field and hitting five threes, against Drake. Drake would go on to make the NCAA Tournament as a 10 seed and won 28 games. Missouri State upset the Bulldogs behind Mason’s big night.
With the departure of Frankie Collins, ASU needs scoring and shooting, Mason provides that.
